The Power of Gathering: Strengthening Our Wai’anae Hawaiian Civic Club
In the heart of Wai’anae, our Hawaiian Civic Club has found a way to bring our members closer, not just through formal meetings, but through meaningful weekly and monthly gatherings that enrich our minds, hearts, and community. By meeting every Monday evening for two hours, we engage in kūkākūkā (talking story and learning ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi) and kanikapila (learning ʻukulele and mele (songs)). These gatherings have become more than just time spent together; they have become a source of personal growth, cultural revitalization, and well-being for our members.
Our Monday sessions offer a space where members can strengthen their connection to ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, an essential part of our identity and heritage. By practicing our language in a supportive environment, we deepen our cultural ties and empower each other to reclaim and perpetuate our mother tongue. The joy of music and mele in kanikapila further enhances our sense of unity, bringing laughter, healing, and a deeper appreciation for kanaka traditions.
Beyond our weekly sessions, our monthly meetings serve as an opportunity to stay informed and engaged with the larger Wai’anae community. Each month, we invite a member from our kaiāulu (community) to share their manaʻ o or moʻ olelo, offering perspectives and wisdom that help us navigate the challenges and opportunities of today. These talks allow us to learn about local initiatives, cultural practices, and issues that affect our community, ensuring that we remain informed, connected, and proactive.
The impact of these gatherings has been profound. By creating a consistent space for learning and fellowship, we have seen an increase in membership. This year, our goal is to welcome at least twenty new members into our ʻohana, continuing to grow our reach and strengthen our club.
